Andrea’s Grandma Silvia’s Chocolate Macaroons
I have made these, and they are actually very good. Tons better then the store-bought ones.
I have no idea why we are asked to place the mixture on top of a paper grocery bag. Please make sure the grocery bag does not catch fire in your oven. Grandma Silvia was living in Boca Raton, FL, when she recorded this recipe, and she suggests we use bags from the Publix grocery chain.
12 oz package semi-sweet chocolate
4 eggs (whites only)
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
8 oz bag of shredded coconut
pinch of salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Melt chocolate in double boiler (if you should have such a thing).
Whip 4 egg whites until stiff. Put mixer (if you should have such a thing) on a slow speed.
Add one cup sugar (very gradually!).
Add vanilla and salt to the mix.
Then the melty chocolate.
Then the whole package of shredded coconut.
This is where the recipe gets a little crazy. Place a brown paper grocery bag (logo side down) on top of a cookie sheet.
Place dollops of mixture on bag.
Heat for 15 minutes.
Let cool.
